Vision CENTROPE 2015

The ‘Vision CENTROPE 2015’ summarises the shared ideas for joint development and togetherness in the four-country region. Presented to the public at large on the occasion of the conference ‘We shape the future’ in March 2006, this future agenda will serve as the foundation for the deepening of cooperation in the years ahead.

An agenda for the Central European Region

In September 2003, the political leaders of the regions and cities in the border quadrangle formed by the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Austria jointly decided to further the development of the cross-border Central European Region, CENTROPE.

For over two years, experts from the fields of politics, administration, economy, research, culture, tourism, labour and the media in all partner regions were intensively concerned with clarifying the possibilities and conditions for the development of a strong and multifaceted CENTROPE region. Over 200 experts added their know-how and ideas to this development process, discussed and condensed their input in common perspectives. This has resulted in a wealth of detailed analyses and strategy recommendations for future co-operation.

The Vision CENTROPE 2015 highlights the development process achieved so far and shows where CENTROPE is currently at and what CENTROPE aims to attain in the future. It reflects the progress made over the past two years; at the same time, it provides a basis for discussion in order to deepen the joint efforts in coming years.

An image of tomorrow as a task for today

Looking ahead to 2015 permits us to engage in considerations that go beyond the requirements of day-to-day politics. At the same time, strategically speaking, 2015 does not seem all that far away – thus the visions formulated in this document in fact acquire a high degree of plausibility.

Each of the chapters dealing with different thematic areas begins with a description of the border quadrangle in 2015, outlining the potential situation after one decade of joint development work. Not unlike travellers in a time machine, we can thus identify the value added that has been created through co-operation. The subsequent text sections present the development status in 2005/2006 and focus on the specific conditions and situations in the quadrangle by duly presenting the problems, challenges, differences, opportunities and co-operation results achieved so far. The ‘Development Perspective’ and ‘Agenda’ sections superimpose the vision for the future on the current situation to derive fundamental strategic orientations and options for priority action that will contribute to the success of the Central European Region.

The Vision CENTROPE 2015 is to function as a kind of snapshot to inform about findings and possible perspectives proposed so far; it wants to provide suggestions, trigger reflections, generate new impulses and offer a framework for the creative and productive evolution of CENTROPE, in keeping with the motto ‘we grow together – together we grow’.
